Branding FAQs

Answers to the most asked branding FAQs

Below we have compiled a list of some the most commonly asked questions. If you don’t find the answer you are looking for, or would simply like a little more information, just submit a question of your own, and a member of our team will be in touch.

  • What are brand strategy frameworks?

Brand strategy frameworks are the structured tools strategists use to make sure nothing important gets skipped, things like brand pyramids, positioning maps and messaging hierarchies. We use proven frameworks in our discovery process, but we treat them as scaffolding rather than the building.

The framework guarantees rigour. What makes your brand strategy work is the specific, ownable insight about your business that no template can generate, and that comes from the deep-dive.

  • Are there different types of brand strategy?

Yes. Different brands need different approaches, and the right one depends on what you’re building. A product-based brand strategy focuses attention on a hero product, while purpose-driven strategies lead with values like sustainability.

Family branding groups multiple products under one master brand, and a global brand strategy adapts positioning across regional markets. Most growing Australian businesses need something simpler done brilliantly, one clear position, one coherent identity, one consistent voice, which is just what our packages are built to deliver.

  • How does brand positioning actually work?

Brand positioning is the deliberate act of claiming a space in your customer’s mind that competitors can’t easily take. Strong positioning captures what your company stands for and your brand’s unique difference, connecting your target audience, your category, the benefit you deliver and the reason they should believe you.

We get there through market research and competitor analysis, then compress the answer into a positioning statement sharp enough to guide every design and messaging decision that follows.

  • What is a brand story, and do I need one?

Your brand story is the narrative thread that makes your business memorable and human, why you exist, what you believe and where you’re taking your customers. It’s not a fairy tale on your about page.

Done properly, brand storytelling frames your brand as the guide that helps customers overcome their challenge, and it runs through your website copy, your pitch and your social content. People buy from brands they feel an emotional connection with, and story is how that connection starts.

  • What is a brand personality?

Your brand’s personality is the set of human characteristics people attach to your business, considered or playful, premium or accessible, bold or reassuring.

It shapes your brand voice, your visual identity and how your team writes an email. We define it deliberately in the strategy stage because an undefined personality doesn’t read as neutral, it reads as forgettable.

  • What is brand equity and why does it matter?

Brand equity is the commercial value stored in how recognisable and trusted your brand is, and it grows with every promise your brand makes and keeps. It’s why a known brand can charge more than an identical unknown one.

Every consistent, on-strategy appearance of your brand deposits a little more equity, building recognition, trust and pricing power. A strong brand identity can increase customer recognition by around 80%, which is brand equity doing its quiet compounding work.

  • How does a brand strategy build brand loyalty?

Brand loyalty is emotional before it’s rational. Around 7 out of 10 consumers want brands that reflect their personal values, and people have a basic psychological need to belong.

A clear brand strategy tells the market what you stand for, keeps your messaging consistent enough to be trusted, and gives customers something to belong to. That’s how strong brands foster loyalty, turning one-off buyers into a loyal customer base in a way that outlasts any loyalty programme.

  • What’s your process for developing a brand strategy?

Every project starts with the brand development deep-dive, a structured discovery session covering your market, competitors, customers and ambition. From there we run the competitive analysis, define your target audience and distil your value proposition and positioning statement.

Then the strategy meets the craft, personality, voice and key messages get written, and the visual identity gets designed against the strategy rather than alongside it. Tight project management keeps it all moving, and it’s a proven way to build a brand strategy that survives contact with the real world, because the people doing the thinking are the same people doing the making.

  • Can you build a brand strategy for a startup?

Absolutely, and it’s some of our favourite work. When you’re starting from a blank page there’s no legacy to unpick, just decisions to make well. We’ll create a brand strategy from a blank page, one that defines your positioning before your first customer ever sees you, so you launch with the clarity and confidence of an established brand.

For startups the strategy stage is doubly valuable, because the thinking about audience, category and difference sharpens the business plan as well as the brand.

  • What is brand architecture?

Brand architecture is how your brands, products and services relate to each other, one master brand over everything, standalone product brands, or something in between.

It sounds abstract until you launch your second product and have to decide what it’s called and how it looks. We consider architecture in the strategy stage so your brand can grow without every new offering starting a naming crisis.

  • How do you get to know our target audience?

Through the brand development deep-dive, a structured discovery session that owners consistently call the most valuable hour of the project. We interrogate who your best customers are, why they genuinely choose you, and what they care about, then pressure-test it against market research and consumer behaviour. That means proper research into demographics and psychology, never guesswork.

We map your target market and your target customers, from the loyal regulars you serve today to the potential customers you haven’t won yet, charting their customer preferences along the way, and the session surfaces valuable insights your competitors simply can’t copy. Understanding your target audience properly is what makes the difference between messaging that resonates and messaging that fills space. Nearly 60% of consumers want businesses to understand their needs better, and that understanding is exactly what the strategy stage delivers.

  • Where do brand guidelines fit in?

Brand guidelines are where your brand strategy becomes usable by other people. Ours document the positioning, personality, voice and visual identity rules in one practical kit, so every future designer, printer, agency or team member applies the brand strategy effectively and consistently.

Guidelines are how you maintain consistency long after launch, and consistency is what protects the brand equity you’ve paid to build.

  • How much does brand strategy cost?

Because our brand strategy work is built into our branding packages rather than sold as a separate consulting project, you’re not paying strategy-firm day rates for workshops.

A focused visual identity with strategic direction starts from a few thousand dollars, and a complete visual and verbal identity with the full deep-dive runs to five figures. Send an enquiry or request a quote and you’ll get instant access to detailed packages and pricing before we ever get on a call.

  • Do you review or refine a brand strategy over time?

A brand strategy is a long term plan, not a set-and-forget document. Markets shift, competitors reposition and audiences evolve, so it pays to review how the strategy is performing against clear objectives every year or two, and whenever something material changes in your market.

Many clients come back to us as they grow, to extend the brand into new products, refresh the messaging or run a strategic rebrand that protects the existing brand equity they’ve earned while repositioning for what’s next.

  • What is a brand’s purpose?

Your brand’s purpose is the reason your brand exists beyond making a profit, and it sits at the very centre of a comprehensive brand strategy. Purpose feeds your mission statement, shapes your core values and gives your brand story its spine.

It matters commercially as well as philosophically, because 77% of customers prefer brands that share their values, and purpose is how you tell them what those values are. We uncover yours in the deep-dive, not by inventing something lofty, but by putting words to what already drives the business.

  • Where do brand values and a mission statement fit in?

Brand values are the core principles that guide how your business behaves, and your mission statement is the working summary of what you’re here to do. In a successful brand strategy they’re decision-making tools rather than wall art.

Values shape your brand voice and your internal communication, the mission keeps your marketing efforts pointed at the same goal across all your communication channels, and both feed the brand messaging your customers actually see. When they’re genuine, they build the emotional connection that keeps loyal customers coming back.

  • Can a strong brand strategy improve our marketing campaigns?

Dramatically. Your company’s brand strategy is the platform every campaign stands on. With clear positioning and a defined target audience, your marketing campaigns start from certainty instead of debate, your agencies brief faster, and your content stays consistent across every channel.

It also makes performance measurable, because you can set key performance indicators against your business objectives and review progress properly. Brands that lead with storytelling see engagement lift by around 20%, and with over 90% of marketers using social media for brand awareness, a clear identity keeps every post recognisably yours.

  • What is emotional branding?

Emotional branding is the deliberate use of your brand to create feeling, belonging, trust, aspiration, delight, rather than just recognition. It works because buying decisions are emotional before they’re rational, and because people have a basic psychological need for belongingness.

A good brand strategy identifies the emotional connection your brand can honestly own, then your visual identity, brand voice and brand story deliver it consistently, right through to community building around the brand. That feeling is what customers remember long after they’ve forgotten your feature list.

  • How do we know if our brand strategy is working?

Track consumer perceptions, not just sales, and watch how customers perceive you over time. Brand recognition climbing, better-quality enquiries, customers repeating your own positioning language back to you, a stronger online reputation and steadier pricing power are all signs the strategy has taken hold.

Set a handful of key performance indicators when the brand launches, review them regularly, analyse audience responses every few months, and watch new trends and technologies so the brand stays relevant. Keep an eye on competitors’ positioning too, so you can adjust before you’re crowded. Good brand strategies compound quietly, so give them time to work.

  • Where are you based, and where do you work?

We’re a Brisbane studio and we design packaging for product brands right across Australia. Most of a packaging project happens over video calls and shared files anyway, so distance has never been an issue. If you’d like a closer look at how we work in your city, we have dedicated pages for packaging design in Sydney, packaging design in Melbourne, packaging design in Brisbane, packaging design in Adelaide, packaging design in Perth, packaging design on the Gold Coast and packaging design on the Sunshine Coast.

  • Where are you based, and where do you work?

We’re based in Brisbane and work with clients right across Australia, mostly remotely and just as comfortably in person when you’re nearby. If you’d like to see how we approach your own city, we have a dedicated page for each: branding agency in Brisbane, branding agency on the Gold Coast, branding agency on the Sunshine Coast, branding agency in Sydney, branding agency in Melbourne, branding agency in Perth and branding agency in Adelaide. Wherever you are, the process is the same: strategy first, then an identity built to last.

  • How do I choose the right brand design agency?

Start with the work. A brand design agency should be able to show you featured work across a range of industries, from trades to innovation-led start-ups, not one house style repeated, and explain the thinking behind the branding work, because effective branding needs strategic depth, not just something that looks good. Then look at how they work. A good creative agency asks a lot of questions before it draws anything, because a deep understanding of your business, your market and your competitors is what the design is built on, and that expertise shows in the questions they ask.

Check the fit as well. Some agencies are set up for enterprise and their professional services and pricing reflect that. Others are two people and a laptop. We sit in the middle on purpose: a small Brisbane team with the expertise to handle a full rebrand, and the habit of going the extra mile because our name is on the work too. The right brand design agency for you is the one whose process you can follow, whose work you would be proud to put your name to, and who still picks up the phone after launch, and that is the standard we hold ourselves to.

  • How long does a brand identity project take, and what happens in the discovery session?

Most agency brand identity projects in Australia run somewhere between four and twelve weeks from kick-off to final files, and ours sit inside that range. The exact timeline depends on the package, how quickly feedback comes back and how many people need to sign off, so we give you a fixed schedule at the quote stage rather than a guess here.

The process follows the same key steps every time: discovery, strategy, design, implementation and then maintenance once it is out in the world. Our discovery sessions usually last about 30 minutes and give us a general understanding of your business, your industry and your target market before we develop the identity.

If you work with us on a complete identity package (both visual & verbal elements), then we’ll facilitate a deep-dive brand intensive with you which usually lasts anywhere between 1-3 hours. How long that runs depends on how many people are in the room and how established you already are. We’re a friendly bunch, so either way there’s nothing to worry about, and by the end of it you’ll know exactly how long your own project will take.

  • Do you provide copywriting services?

We don’t offer standalone copywriting, but we do write copy as part of certain deliverables, like websites, packaging and sales materials.

Our main focus is the verbal identity: helping you define your tone of voice, your brand positioning and your brand story, then writing them up as detailed messaging guidelines as part of our Brand Master solution. Those guidelines come packed with the story, the positioning statement, the brand’s values, taglines and a set of messaging examples, so anyone writing for the company later has a solid base and the words sound like the same company as the visuals.

Need extra copy support beyond that? We’re happy to connect you with trusted writers who can take it from there, briefed with your guidelines so nothing drifts.
